Today winsomecowboy and I are joined by Mykola Bilokonsky, kymlee, Ryan Stolte-Sawa, and even Walt D and rwarner for a bit, by phone.
You can find the feed for the podcast over here, or if you prefer, you can listen to the audio directly in an embedded player on thevinecast.com. There is even a subscribe by email option for those that don't use a podcatcher or rss feed reader but want to be kept up to date. And for you itunes users, of course you can use that too.
Just some of the things discussed in the 62 minutes of Vinecasty goodness were...
If you have any suggestions, questions, etc......send them right on over to me at brad@thevinecast.com, and if you have a particular Viner you'd like to hear on the Vinecast (or you'd like to be on the panel yourself), let us know and we'll do our best to make it happen...especially now that I can easily call people on a real phone and take calls...it's easier than ever to be part of the Vinecast!
Oh, and check out this interview I did with Scott Butki about the Vinecast. Fun times!
I still think everyone on vinecast should be pantless or at least pretend to pantsless. There should be a booming voice at the beginning before introductions saying"Introducing Our Pantsless Panelists". This is my vision. I just can't shake it.
Note to self: if you do this again, turn down your microphone a bit because you sound like a crazy person.
You didn't sound like a crazy person.
*whispers* turn your speakers down when listening ;)
You don't sound crazy. You sounded very reasonable, just loud. :)
Nah. Its the prevailing conditions Myk.
I can't blame people for being so upset, that would disqualify me from discussion.
Hey Brad, how 'bout Beijing and ah, the Emperor's naked bottom.
You are going to comment/shadow NV's coverage of DNC, RNC and Don Quixote, er, Ron Paul's. ahem, yeah, whatever it is.
I blame Obama...
Great job everyone, and congrats on winning the Podcast of the Week. We just listened to the whole thing in the office.
By the way, with regard to the "capping of comments" thing, I just talked to Lance and he was unaware that this bug hadn't been squashed yet. Is it still a problem? Shouldn't be, and certainly isn't intentional of course.
I'm actually kind of impressed, apparently if you just get on a recording with some of your friends and talk about stuff you're interested in then people notice?
At any rate, good work, Brad. :)
honestly I just have a hard time understanding why anyone would listen to an hour of meta-drama discussion from the lunatic fringe of a news site community...but, hey, whatever. :)
What is "Capping of Comments"?
I think he means the archiving that Winsome (also newly known as winnie in some circles) was talking about.
Not me,I would NEVER, lol.
By the way, with regard to the "capping of comments" thing, I just talked to Lance and he was unaware that this bug hadn't been squashed yet. Is it still a problem? Shouldn't be, and certainly isn't intentional of course.
well I can tell you that the 'capping of comments' is unchanged, unfixed, unavailable.
what do you know? meets, what do you care?
It's only been 3 months since it was brought to your attention and almost 3 weeks since it was further brought to your attention.
Obviously someone else's fault, as calvin says, come-on guys, it's just a website.
best to employ the now patented, squeeky wheel gets blamed, gambit. sorry naughty naughty me.
It's only been 3 months since it was brought to your attention and almost 3 weeks since it was further brought to your attention.
I count 7 days actually. Or, less than one business week. So sorry we were busy switching the entire site to a new data center and launching a feature that's been in the works for a few months. Please send us a bill for your losses.
But you know what? You're absolutely right. I really don't care. I care about fixing bugs, but I don't particularly care that you have an open complaint.
Geez. Relax, Mike D. It's just a website. You've been busy with...stuff. It's all good.
Acts like this is some sort of community or something. This is a business, Mike D. Surely you don't have time to engage is personal conflict. Go...what was it? Right...go fix bugs.
So, did you post your first "Mike D. can suck it" comment, sit around for 13 minutes and realize you had a more different "Mike D. can suck it" comment that you just couldn't keep to yourself, or did you simply forget that you'd already made it clear that you're not a Mike D. fan?
All this righteous indignation is really compelling. No, really ... it is.
Are there really people out there that aren't Mike D. fans?!
Ian: You'll find that 90% of the time I decide to chime in on "controversial" threads, it's simply to correct false statements. When people make statements like "3 months... 3 weeks" thinking no one will call the BS, it's hard not to reply.
May 21, 2008 11:42:38 AM HST
Lance or Mark, is there a way for winsomecowboy here to go back further into his comment history, or do we chop it off at some point?
Calvin
I stand corrected, a week under 3 months.
Thank God you have no embarrassment huh?
Good luck with the snark although maybe you could start smaller, you know, work yourself up . Or maybe focus more on stuff you're good at. Public relations via brittle incorrect condescension while obviously not embarrassing for you kinda leaves you wide open for ridicule. Not a good look for someone who tries so hard to remain above the chatter's you design profit engines with.
Await your next attempt at rebuttal with keen and fearful anticipation.
or you could simply fix it I suppose. It's a bug right?
Maybe even get back to us when it's done. That would be peachy.
I would lend you gratitude you'd richly deserve. Till then.....
I stand corrected, a week under 3 months.
Nope, you stand just as wrong as you usually are. I was first (and last) notified of this bug August 6th (on the Vinecast). Less than a week before your rude remark above.
I was also notified at some point that you were leaving Newsvine. Whatever happened to that?
GOD how I love that Cowboy.
"I'm a really well-defended softie that's what it comes down to, you know."
and
"But at the same time, I'm prepared to go kamikaze on your ass.
(Yes he is! )
Not to take away from the rest of you guys of course! And Mykola, I SWEAR to God, you sounded fine! LoL
I have to finish listening tonight. Need to step out for a while.
You know what I was saying last week about shirts with excellent phrases? This is one of them. Front side would have the quote, the second would have the Vinecast logo.
I've got just under half an hour left. I love winsome bringing back the poo-poo-head line. That one had me rolling last week, and this time I was listening while at the gym and literally had to stop running and lean against the railing.
But I disagree with Ignoring for the same reason Dennis did. If a lurker catches one of them for the first time and no one refutes what they're saying, they may be swayed. They may think no one had an argument against it. As a matter of fact, a certain group's de-facto leader may attempt to bank on that very thing.
?
Oh, you mean the Newsvine Poocast. Well, it sure was good to hear from everyone. Yay pottymouth!
I believe you mean shrimp vindaloo.
Yes. Shrimp are high in iodine. You know what that means.
Shenanigans, Brad! Your article has been telling me there's seven new comments for an hour of no comments now. I've clicked "clear" five times. Quit it! :p
Same here, Steve. Be my friend! :(
Oh. Whoops, I meant to go accept my requests like an hour ago.... Done.
Yes! Finally!
Weird thing is, this is the only article that isn't clearing for me. Everything else I read is fine, but this keeps reappearing even if I manually clear count.
Well played, Brad...
I still think myk deploys a very deft circular argument re, community, friends and not community, bosses.
He trys to have it both ways. I don't, I say be a consistant respected boss, sacrifice the relationships, better the community, take the responsibility of being a figurehead not a 'mate'
He argues it's just a bunch of tools and latent potential. Fair enough.
I don't agree, I argue it's always been that and people make up for the potential not being realised by forming communities. Which incidentally gets sold on for millions and millions of dollars.
Myks argument boils down to those millions of dollars being spent for code. Which is patently unbelievable. If newsvine is not a community but rather a city with a number of large subdivisions that's been built up from a village. Then what do you call a community exactly?
I think Myks quite elastic about what "community" means, given his propensity to play devils advocate and argue for the status quo.
and transparency is the 2.0 bible
oh and that thing about how I was finished everywhere but the kid?
Vinecast columns don't count, this is now part of my business empire, just brads vinecast columns you won't bait me outside.
:)
If that's upsetting then you should buy a crown of thorns and externalise it. It's heathier honestly.
I actually really do want one of those clown crowns of yours. I think they sound splendid. When I'm not wearing it, it will hang above my bed. (Where the cross is supposed to go...?)
your life is the cross silly.
*sigh* It's pretty obvious to me you haven't suffered enough young woman!
You go on the waiting list, it's an extra service, free, patience is a virtue.
Whatever. Send me a crown. I will remit payment in wampum and blood.
W.C., Can we give you our earnings and get the crowd and a vinecast promotion by you to be named later?
you can give me anything you wish.
in exchage can i borrow some of your face paint?
If it was just the code MSNBC could simply duplicate the functionality with two dozen programmers in 6 months and link it from their site to get the influx of new users.
exactly. The 'community' is a large part of the multimillion dollar value. The reason I got off with @!$%#ting on the COH from a great height was the 'Community' to pretend otherwise is ridiculous. Why else was I fostered?
It's not about me. I'm gone, unbruised and unrepentant.
Dennis who was a standard bearer for the 'Community' values that pay for all the trinkets and who incidentally is married to a muslum, got @!$%#ing gangbanged by a bunch of thugs, lieing deceitful cartoon villians who not because of any nationality or racial predudice but there own transparently immoral actions deserve to be put into a room and gassed.
And what does Calvin do? He enables them. presumably because they have as much or more worth than Dennis in a business sense.
Old news...'Unforgiven', buy the Tshirts, watch me monatize morality. :)
I don't really know about most of the stuff on this cast. The question boards seem to be a very well thought out polling device. No grief with that one. Poll away.
Just that, well, does this site need Disney?
I have not changed my mind about how Admin decided that the best way to deal with flame is to extinguish every light. Being fair, being perceptive of motives, is a far more demanding pursuit.
I propose that Admin choose editorial chairs. If the goal is to play with the 800 pound gorillas, let's get some of our own.
I think I'll just post articles with the comments off for now on.
Alright, this is silly. I've been chasing the same four comments on this column since yesterday. WTF, Brad? Did you haxxors teh Noozvien?
queue, theme from the "Twilight Zone."
It works for me, get a better browser.
I mean: it didn't fix my problem, not: I couldn't view that page. My browser is fine. Why you gotta hate?
Liar, then why did you post a music video as if that is going to fix anything?? Tell you what, if you don't like what I do,[ http://darkside.newsvine.com/_news/2008/08/05/1722263-state-of-the-vine-what-the-@!$%#-is-wrong-with-everyone#c2391435] and are to obtuse to take a joke, then put me on ignore or shut tfu
I thought we were sharing jokes! I guess you've never been rickrolled before, so I understand why you might be confused and angry. Feeling like you've been had can be hard. It's OK to feel hurt.
I fixed that problem. If you de-track and re-track, it knocks it off. At least it did for me...
Yeah, it's been working fine since I left this parent comment, actually. I'm just @!$%#in' around now. :D
Re: The Question Board. I didn't check it out till it appeared on my tracker (which I was initially kind of irritated with) but after a couple minutes of browsing the nuclear power plant thread... yeah they are pretty cool.
By.
I think he likes you
Real people are always trying to stop me from playing WON. (World of Newsvine.) I escaped from an organized intervention and I'm on the run now, Do you they think that my Mothers 76th birthday can stop me! HA! They are always one step behind me, as I move from hot spot to hot spot, I have to be quick.
The Orks and Trolls have won here, not just by attrition, but because it's their game and they make their own rules. Your pissed because the you hoped it wasn't what it is. What did you expect. Truth? Fairness? I'm surprised anyone was disappointed in the first place. Gotta go, I see a black van....by.
Wow, we may have been mired in meta, but that was a very interesting conversation. I know my example was a little extreme, but when I think of people who have literally been stalked as an extension of cyber bullying, I find it hard to accept the idea of just ignoring said harassment. I've always been a little on the militant side though.
You better hope the meta doesn't simmer down, as that was by far the most intriguing aspect of the vinecast, and the portion where everyone seemed to speak with the most candor and comfort.
;)
It has simmered down, a lot, but at quite a high price.
The thing is with the meta... If you're going for a wider audience, you're gonna want to tone it back. But as long as you're looking at releasing a "cleaner" version and an "unedited" one, my suggestion is this: Cut the extremely Vine-specific bits out of the meta for the "cleaner" one. Now, bits where winsome is bantering back and forth with Mykola about how and why he behaves as he does here, that can be interesting. That's psychology a little bit. The furor over Dennis's departure, however, has a small audience. Just my twopence.
While I'm suggesting... could you let us know of the download total from last week when you do the Suggestions article? I'm always curious, and I think a 5-day total is a good one.
Trust me, I'm going to bring meta into the mainstream with mid to low level production values and blistering copy.
"Winsomes Revenge--The unforgiven"... Sounds of horse approaching,..halting.....Shotgun blast...'Voiceover' "oooh I bet that stings...Your gonna need a bandaid for that"
"This week" [names victims, jocular disembowelment ensues, T-Shirts and in some cases underwear are promoted]
I've just come off a 48 hour jag from Hawaii to NY, I have about 5 days of elasticity ahead. All is well. But I'd like help with the sound effects, specifically the horse approaching , halting and the shotgun blast. I'll do the rest.
I was in Phoenix airport, I was a little aggrieved and had time on my hands, I took notes, there will be welts. Punctuation is required for these gabfests.
Send me the sound effects I require. Um please.
Actually, I'll start looking for those in a mo'.
Relatedly, Brad, if you ever feel the need for some sound effects to be thrown in, drop me an e-mail and I'll see if GarageBand has 'em.
Just listened to this one, you guys are getting better every time! Keep up the good work.
Another fine cast on the Vinecast! I listen at work with my headphones on to keep the idiots away, but I was laughing out loud so often that I looked like the idiot.
As far obscure Vinecast t-shirts go, I'm thinking a picture of a clown sitting on the toilet would be appropriately inappropriate.
Not a problem, I'll get right 'on it'.
Who will photograph you on the toilet?
that's almost existential.
What, you're in New York?
I just left you a message, yes, I'm on the 7,48 to wassaic this evening. I'm covered for pickup.
Good to know you're in the neighborhood cowboy. Gonna be a good weather day in the tri State. Enjoy!
ROFL.
I'll take one crowns of thorns, please. Six-strand. And check the tool shed, winsome. I bet Moon has whole buckets of rusty nails lying around.
Oh you really want to revel in your suffering, don't you?
I really want my suffering to be as comedic as possible. As usual. That I can still count on the clown to feed my curious nihilism is a great comfort.
;0)
OK this old bald guy finally listened to his first podcast.
well done to all - and putting voices to names - fun
Will Winsome do a different accent every week? (hahahaha)
I want a Big Mac toy attached to my penis!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I want a Big Mac toy attached to my penis!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
winsome owes us a video
I am really looking forward to documentation of this!
Mykola
while generally correct that one should ignore trolls
it is FAR different in the JDL thing when lists are posted elsewhere, people are targeted, private lives interfered with, threads derailed, block voting encouraged/organized, etc. It's a little different ....
the ignore button does not solve the above
ooops ignore above - not looking to debate this here .....
enjoying the cast
Well I've just got back online, I missed the vinecast but no matter, I will not be thwarted. I have some inserts, 2 jokes + the bumbling American sexual adventures of Derrick the kalgoorlie opal miner + "unforgiven" plus a couple of other things, AND PRODUCTS with ADDED SNARK.
Plus getting the distribution chain together for the crowns of thorns.
Am intrigued by the proposed increase in Snarkiness quotient. Does this involve Snarkiness worthy individuals, or just in general?
Alright, alright... Will be waiting...
